A weekend in Malta

My wife and I were yearning for a tropical getaway this past March. Luxembourg was chilly, and spring's arrival was as unpredictable as ever. We decided to book the first available seasonal flights to Malta from Luxembourg with Ryanair. In just about two hours, we landed in the southernmost country of Europe, known for its pleasant year-round weather. Although the water wasn't warm enough for a swim, we had a memorable time exploring the two prominent cities, Valletta and Mdina. Our trip to Malta was all about soaking up the sunshine and indulging in the island's culinary delights. I had the opportunity to capture stunning photos of Malta's architecture, showcasing the unique texture and color of the pastel rocks used in its buildings. The island's rich history, shaped by numerous rulers over the centuries, is beautifully reflected in its diverse architectural styles.

The beauty of Valetta

Valetta is a walled city that can be explored by foot. We spent entire Saturday walking around the city and soaking in all the sunshine. The ocean keeps peeping at you from many corners and the vibrant colours in the windows inspires you to ad colour to your life. St. John's Co-Cathedral and the Upper Barrakka Gardens are definetely worth the visit. We can even grab a quick bit in the numerous street vendors selling local delights as well as international street food.

The city exudes unbelievable romantic vibes.

On day two, we visited Mdina, the former capital of Malta. This enchanting city, featured in several episodes of Game of Thrones, transports you back in time with its historic charm. The internet’s fascination with the doors and windows of Mdina is well-deserved—they are truly beautiful and unique.

Doors that stand out

We indulged in lunch at The Medina, a Michelin-starred restaurant. What stood out most was its transformation of a grand, historic building into a venue with opulent, royal interiors. The service was impeccable, and the cuisine offered a distinctive and sophisticated twist on traditional local delicacies.

Although we visited Mdina and Valletta, we chose to stay in St. Paul’s Bay. The Airbnb we stayed costed us around 85 euros for two people for 2 nights. The accommodation and food in Malta were extremely economical compared to Western Europe. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to visit other popular island destinations like Gozo. If beaches are your priority, consider taking a day cruise to the island. For nightlife, St. Julian’s is the place to be. Public transport primarily consists of buses connecting various towns, and Uber was also quite convenient for getting around.
